Verified Reviewer |Resolved: Failure to folow through on promised action.
- - Requested drug-tier cost change for a prescribed med.
- - BCBS claimed to contact the doctor for records and notify me; the doctor says he never received the request.
There was really no resolution. BCBS's plan is not what was implied when I agreed to sign up and I am now going to have to pay a lot more for prescriptions that origianllly anticipated.
Expect to look for another provider next year. Don't believe what they tell you and take more time to explore the total costs and reimbursement available before assigning them to be your health insurance provider.
I had AETNA before and they were great. Unfortunately the hospital where all of my doctors belong - Endeavor, foremerly North Shore, discontinued their affiliation with AETNA this year likely to save even more money to put in their pockets.
When I called BCBS to check on the status of my request they said it was denied but could not tell me if my doctor ever responsed to their request.
As I had already contacted my doctor who informed me he had never received their request I knew they were not being truthful. BCBS refused to let me talk to anyone else and would not provide me with anyone else I could talk to.
Based on all the other complaints of dissatifaction with BCBS I think it's time for the Illinois Health Insurance agency to investigate but as they are likley large donors to Illinois politicians I do not expect this to happen.
Hope the Trump administration gets around to finding a way to put these insurnace companies on notice that they better take care of their customers or expect to be replaced by companies that will.
- Unfortunately it is the only insurance option available
- Poor customer service
Preferred solution: I would like to have an upper level BCBS representative or executive contact me to discuss this issue and explain their poor customer service.
User's recommendation: Try AETNA. I had them for two years and they were great. Had to change to BCBS because my health provider Endeavor refused to renew their AETNA affiliation.

Verified Reviewer |Blue Cross-Blue Shield is a criminal scam
- - BCBS promised $47/mo for Eliquis after Walgreens switch.
- - Cost was $750, $200 more than last month.
- - BCBS advised asking the doctor for free samples.
My 90-year-old mother signed up for a Blue Cross-Blue Shield prescription drug plan. She was promised that she would pay only $47.00 per month for the life-saving drug Eliquis, if she switched her provider from Osco to Walgreens.
But when I went to pick up her monthly prescription, the charge was $750.00, $200.00 more than she paid last month.
When I called Blue Cross-Blue Shield, asking how my mother could pay the exorbitant cost of this drug, I was told to ask her doctor for free samples of Eliquis. Blue Cross-Blue Shield is a criminal operation that scams sick seniors.
Preferred solution: Full refund
User's recommendation: Avoid Blue Cross-Blue Shield at all costs
Coverage costs
They asked me a bunch of questions and the hung up on me!!! They have my number and all info, why didn't they call back?!!!
User's recommendation: Go to another provider
Prescription need to treat my condition.
- - Blue Cross won't cover Talkz; Humira was covered.
- - The plan costs about 800 monthly.
- - Doc switched to Talkz for pain; insurer calls it top-shelf med.
Every time we get a new prescription Blue Cross has some kinda reason not paid for it... My husband gets med insurance thru his work and paying around 800.00 a month .
I have been taking Humira two years ago and no problem with getting them to pay. Now my doc switch me to Talkz because the pain and inflammation was bad... So Blue cross will not pay for this meds which is the same delivery as Humira.
The insurance company stated it is top shelve med... So what the *** does that mean?
Preferred solution: Deliver product or service ordered
User's recommendation: No, BEWARE!!!
Healthcare scam.
- - We pay over $5,000 a year for family insurance with a $7,000 deductible, about $12,000 before payout.
- - After the deductible is met, they pay 80/20.
Bluecross Blueshield of Illinois are thiefs. We pay over $5000 a year for family insurance with a $7000 deductible!!!!
That's $12,000 a year before they will pay anything!!
They are stealing hardworking peoples money and giving nothing in return. After the deductable is met then they only pay 80/20!!
User's recommendation: Find a different insurance company to use uf you can.

Verified ReviewerBilling for an MRI
- - X-ray: arthritis; pain was in muscles, not bone.
- - MRI approval delayed; six months later a $686 bill.
- - Billing was unhelpful while I appeal the bill.
I had pain in my shoulder, went in for an x-ray which came back with arthritis, but the pain causing me not to sleep was in my shoulder muscles, not the bone. Anyways doc recommended an MRI and said I needed to wait to get approved...
so I waited to get approved and a couple of days later I received a call that I could now schedule my MRI. 6 months later I am stuck with a 686.00 dollar bill saying that I was authorized but not approved for the procedure.
After countless hours talking with billing I am getting no help and I keep getting thrown around like a rag doll. I am appealing this bill and I will be switching insurance companies as soon as possible because blue cross blue shield of Illinois are the biggest scammer I have ever dealt with.
Preferred solution: Price reduction
User's recommendation: Don’t pick this insurance company. Worst company ever

Verified ReviewerDon’t contact their customer service! It sucks!
- - Reps blame customers for BCBS system issues.
- - System changes block online payments; I spent hours on calls, paid by phone; rep option gone.
The reps at BCBS aren’t helpful, don’t know what they’re talking about & blame YOU, the customer for THEIR system not working. I wanted to simply pay my bill & have been told for 6 MONTHS that they’re ‘changing payment systems’, so...I can’t pay online, it won’t even let me start to fill out my info.
I can’t pay over the phone because after almost 25 YEARS of being a loyal customer, the system doesn’t recognize me. So, I’ve had to call every 2 months for the last 6 months only for the reps to transfer me back & forth & after at least 1.5 - 4 HOURS, they FINALLY help me pay my bill by phone...so, this time I called & was a bit pissed because it had already been an hour & I wanted some answers as to when I could pay online since it’s been half a year & we’re almost in the year 2020. They, in turn, basically called me stupid, said that I was the ONLY one having this problem & that I am ‘entering the (only 6 digit) number wrong’ & that THAT is the problem, NOT that the system can’t find me, even though it says in the automated recording that they can’t find me in the system...on top of all of that, they made it so that if my number shows up to pay through a rep, it automatically gets transferred to Billmatrix, the payment system BCBS uses, & the people there tell me that the system can’t find me, so at least THEY know that that’s the case, but it still doesn’t help me pay my bill. So now, the last resource I have to pay my bill (by representative), is gone as well, all because of them insisting it’s my fault & that I’m entering my number wrong instead of helping, like they’re supposed to do since it’s their job...a little background about me btw, not that it matters because a toddler could enter numbers on a keypad, but I speak 3 languages, have a B.S.
in biology, a minor in chemistry & am starting my M.Sc. soon, so yeah, it’s not that I am somehow mentally unable to enter my zip code & member ID number...anyway, good luck to any of you trying to pay your health insurance payment with BCBS when they’re ‘changing payment systems’ & good luck finding a competent rep to help you, with anything.
Preferred solution: Set up internet payment for customers
LOL good luck you will need it.....
looks like will be no payment.. after spending $43000.00
Preferred solution: some payment for some services.
Worst
- - Transport did not come for my five doctor visits.
- - No transport support for translations; I may deal with it myself; change insurance; avoid Blue Cross.
Transport never did not come for me to visit a doctor whom I had 5 visits. The best translations do not have anyone to send from transport.
Or can I deal with myself because they do not have time.
Change the insurance. Never Blue Cross!!!!

Verified ReviewerPoor Customer Service and High Premiums
- - The monthly premium is high.
- - There are large balances on preventive care.
- - One procedure costs $600.
- - Customer service is hard to understand.
Not only do I pay an extremely high premium per month, I still have large balances on routine preventative screenings. The only way our voice can be heard is to complain tot he Department of Insurance.
They regulate all insurance companies. It is unfair they continue to charge us huge premiums and they have made a huge profit every year.
One procedure my out of pocket was $600 and had to pay on site.
If you call customer service you might get a person who's English is so bad, it is difficult to understand them. I would think for the amount of money they charge us, they could at least get customer service people dealing with very sensitive matters, who might be able to speak English a little better.

Verified Reviewer |Do I need preauthorization????
- - Customer service can't answer questions about procedures.
- - Need biopsy and procedure code; doctor is on vacation; cost unclear.
No one at 800-538-**** can answer a question. I need a biopsy to see if I have cancer, I need to give them a procedure code but my Doctor is on Vacation. No one can answer a question with out a procedure code, Very Poor Customer service. So If I have the procedure in the doctors office or Hospital will this cost me more. Why can't Blue Cross Blue Shield answer this question.
Last week I could not renew a medication you told me when I enrolled in my insurance I could take.
Blue Cross Blue Shield Need a competitor and has to stop paying all their stock holders. This is the only PPO Insurance Company at Healthcare.org.
I guess they don't care about their customers any more!! Time to find a new insurance company that will care!!!!
Customer service
- - Current treatment works well but drugs are very expensive.
- - Online pharmacy and back-and-forth with doctors cause long holds.
i'm prescribed a treatment with very expensive drugs ive tried a few untill this current one which is working well. They force me to use the online pharmacy which is the worst.I i don't do most of the back and forth between dr and pharmacy i get nothing. If i don't call back(and sit on hold for ever like 30 min)i get nothing.I really really seems like they are stonewalling me and the dr office till you get too tired of fighting them and give up.This last time i had a prescripition for three refills after 2 they said my pa expired making me jump through more hoops, then said its in a cost investigation now i'm well past my dose date still fighting them.

Denied follow up PET scans at Mayo Clinic
- - Stage IV cancer survivor.
- - Mayo Clinic treated after poor care in Peoria.
- - Five-year follow-up found lesions that were granulomas.
I am a stage IV cancer survivor. Mayo Clinic saved me after receiving poor treatment in Peoria.
After 5 years they took follow up scans to check for recurrence. They did see lesions and repeated later twice at three month intervals.
Blue Cross denied because not medically necessary! The lesions turned out to be granulomas not cancer thankfully but we did not know it at the time.

Complaint regarding Peer-to-Peer Review
- - Intensive Outpatient Program required 3 peer reviews.
- - One doctor, Dr. Helding, was rude.
- - BCBS reviewers were not listening and condescending.
The Intensive Outpatient Mental Health Program had to go through 3 peer-to-peer reviews to get a patients sessions approved and the Doctor's that our physicians spoke with all 3 times were very rude, disrespectful, and unethical. One of the Doctors was Dr.
Helding.
Examples include: hanging up on our physician 2 times, and telling them, "you do not have any information I need, good bye". The BCBS peer-review physicians were not interested in listening to our physicians as they provided clinical information for our patient and proceeded to speak in a very rude and condescending tone to our physicians and supporting clinical staff during the review processes.
- Unethical behavior in the peer-to-peer review process
Preferred solution: Reversal of authorization for our patient as well as an appology to our physicians
